Founder of Expansive EDGE · Creator of ControlShift™

Operator turned founder. Two decades scaling service businesses, now codifying their operational intelligence as a transferable asset. Based in Cochrane, Alberta.

I've spent the last two decades watching service businesses get to the same wall.

The wall is when the owner is the system. Every important decision routes to them. The senior people each carry a piece of how the business works that nobody else can read. The documentation, if it exists at all, hasn't been updated since the launch meeting three years ago. The team is doing real work, real outcomes are happening, real revenue is flowing, and underneath all of it, the operating logic of the business lives in a small number of heads, vulnerable to every departure.

I founded Expansive EDGE in 2023 to do something specific about that wall. Not to sell more consulting hours, and not to ship another binder of SOPs that gets ignored. To produce an asset I named Codified Operational Intelligence™, the structured, AI-ready capture of how a service business actually works, in a form that outlasts the people who built it. The methodology that produces it is called ControlShift. Eight stages, AI-supported at every step, scoped to the small number of processes that actually drive the business.

Before Expansive EDGE, I spent close to twenty years inside service-business operations, trades, field service, robotics, automation. Different industries, the same wall. I held an MBA, ran teams, made the same mistakes most founders make, recovered from them, and quietly built up a pattern library of what works and what looks like it works but doesn't. ControlShift is the methodology I wish someone had handed me at the start.

What I'm doing now is finishing two books, ControlShift (the methodology) and BE Expansive (the operating philosophy behind it), and writing on this blog every other Tuesday. Most of the writing is the practical version of what I'd say to a peer founder over coffee, scoped to the operating problems most service businesses are actually facing right now.

What I work on

Three categories of work, in priority order.

Codification engagements. The core of what Expansive EDGE delivers. Service businesses with 10 to 250 employees, mostly in trades, construction, field service, restoration, mining services, and oil and gas. A focused 16-week Phase 1 engagement that captures and codifies the 8 to 12 core processes that drive most of the business's value. See The 16-Week Roadmap for the week-by-week walkthrough.

Operational diagnostics. The ControlShift Insights Assessment, a 45-90 minute self-serve diagnostic that scores a service business across all 8 ControlShift stages and produces a 40+ page report. Standalone product at $497 CAD; often the entry point to a larger engagement.

Writing and speaking. The blog, the two forthcoming books, and the TBGF (The Business Growth Factor) podcast I co-host with a CPA collaborator. Most of the writing aims at one thing: helping service-business operators see the operational landscape clearly enough to decide what to do next.
